We decorated five different vivariums in the vivarium gallery in Manchester, England.
After designing the systems, it was up to the local construction and electrical engineers to build the vivariums according to our specifications. The vivarium gallery consists of a wide range of different dessert and tropical rainforest exhibits. Snakes, dessert lizards as well as poison dart frogs are on display. We were responsible for the rainforest exhibits.
Vivarium 1 is a riverbanks display with a water part of 70cm high in which big tropical fish cross the water. Above the water on the liana’s lizards are basking in the sun, waiting for their prey. Many big orchids and bromeliads root on the branches and on the background.
Vivarium 2 is a look through vivarium in which brightly coloured poison dart frogs lives on the moss-covered land parts. Two trees aside planted with little botanical orchids and bromeliads, allows the frogs put their tadpoles in. The lighting consists of several 36-Watt Dulux lights in combination with a 7 Watt UV light. A spray bar hidden behind the tree fern root waters the trees. The water, purified with the same system as in number 1, changes for 10% every day. An ultrasonic humidifier produces a fine mist in the morning, when the frogs come out of their hiding places, looking for the insects they feed on.
Vivarium 3 is a Madagascar-jungle. Red tomato frogs live on the ground. On the branches, a Chameleon slowly moves to his prey. Botanical orchids are everywhere. A waterfall rushes down the hill. Because this vivarium is rather high (180 cm), we used 2 x 150 Watt HQI to get sufficient lighting on the bottom of the tank.
Vivarium 4 and 5 are mini ecological systems. Emphasis is on the tiny small wonderful world when you focus on one branch in the tropical rainforest. Amazing quantity of specimen are found on such a small part! Mosses, little orchids, ferns and bromeliads cover the whole place. Tiny poison dart frogs, tree frogs in the night, call to defend their territories. Lighting is 36-Watt Dulux. Water purified through reversed osmosis, makes the water quality, pure, soft and acid.
